Description
Summary:factors that influence the decision to pursue an elementary education degree. The second purpose of this study was to show trends in career choices and opportunities for women and compare salaries among other professions. The final purpose was to make a determination regarding the recruitment of future elementary school teachers in relationship to influencing factors as the result of the data gathered from the population. The groups of students who received a two-part questionnaire consisted of female student teachers for the Spring Semester 1998 from selected Texas private universities located in South Texas and included Austin, Texas. Section 1 of the questionnaire was designed to describe personal and educational biographical information. Section 11 was designed to describe the relative strength of influencing factors in pursuing a degree in elementary education. An analysis of the data was completed on each of the sections. Major research findings for the study indicated: The majority of respondents attributed the greatest influencing factor in pursuing an elementary education degree to previous job-related experience in working with children. 2. A correlation was found between the desire to become a teacher and the satisfaction felt in working with children. 3. The results of the research study show many consistencies with motivational components as cited in the literature for entry-level elementary teachers. 4. The data gathered showed the majority of the students felt more awareness of teaching as a career option needs to bemade to others. Based on the findings of the study, researcher recommendations include: Universities should develop partnerships with schools in the community for tutoring, centering, or teacher assistance and require the college students to complete a minimum number of community service hours each year. 2. Universities should reexamine the sequence of their education courses to require the fulfillment of field experience hours beginning with the first education course. 3. A recruitment committee needs to be developed for outreach purposes, panel discussions, tours, and the development of a teacher education brochure.
