Summary:A meta-analysis was used to assess the comparative
effectiveness of a standard individual training protocol and
the active interlocked modeling (AIM) dyadic training
protocol for complex skill acquisition on Space Fortress, a
video game-like complex skills trainer. Meta-analyses were
also performed to determine if there were moderator variables
that would place boundary conditions on the effectiveness of
these training protocols. The meta-analysis was conducted on
19 studies using the Individual and AIM-Dyad training
protocols. The Individual protocol was present in all 19
studies (N=915) while the AIM-Dyad protocol was present in 10
of the 19 studies (N=390). Effect sizes (d) were computed as
the improvement over baseline for each protocol. Results
from the meta-analysis show that the AIM-Dyad trainees
performed as well or better than their Individual
counterparts on tests of skill acquisition. This finding is
important because the AIM-Dyad protocol relative to the
Individual protocol achieves a 100% increase in training
efficiency, defined in terms of a reduction in trainer time
and resources. Three variables were determined to have a
moderating effect on the training protocols: (1) number of
training sessions per day; (2) number of training days; and
(3) bonus for high performance. The findings from the
present study provide strong support for the future use of
the AIM-Dyad protocol for complex skills training in other
areas including pilot training, development of motor control
strategies, and classroom education. However, future
research must be conducted to determine how the AIM-Dyad
protocol can be implemented successfully in these areas.
