Summary:The goal of this research is to provide intelligent support to design and construct discrete-event simulation models based on information contained in a set of domain experts descriptions of a system. In particular, this research looks at integrating descriptions arising from multiple agent viewpoints, multiple levels of abstraction, different sub- systems, and from multiple description methods. By providing such intelligent support for simulation model design and construction, decision makers can conduct simulation analysis without extensive training and within a short period of time. This research area is new and innovative as none of the existing tools and theory address the issue of integrating multiple viewpoint descriptions to design simulation models. An important contribution of this research is recognizing the fact that there are multiple perspectives in an organization and these perspectives can be usefully combined to build model based decision support systems. This work has made model based decision support systems. This work has made advances in the areas of 1) characterizing domain experts descriptions in manufacturing systems, 2) developing an ontology to aid in the representation of simulation model design, and 3) developing the reasoning mechanisms required to design simulation models from one or more descriptions.
