| Summary: | This study investigated Mexican American males' perceived justifiability of rape based on differing dating risk factor levels. Responses were analyzed based on participants' acculturation and hypermasculinity. All participants (n 259) received three vignettes that varied in their level of risk; the number of "risky" behaviors a woman engaged in during the sequence of events. Each participant answered yes, maybe, or no to 16 "risky" behaviors that might be judged to justify the man having sex against the woman's will in the vignettes. Results indicated a significant difference based on the three levels of risk. The more "risky" behavior the woman engaged in, the more men saw the rape as justifiable. There were also significant differences found based on a man' s hypermasculinity level and individual risk factor question. There were no differences found based on the two acculturation groups. Effects sizes were small, therefore, caution must be taken when interpreting results. |
