| Summary: | The cattle tick, Boophilus microplus (Can.) , has been controlled in Venezuela through acaricide treatments on cattle and without technical based planning. Tactical acaricide treatments and pasture rotation as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the control of the cattle tick, Boophilus microplus, were evaluated through simulation models in three Venezuelan ecological zones. The BABSIM simulation model was used to evaluate acaricide treatment simulations and a new simulation model was constructed to evaluate systematic pasture rotation systems. Results showed that both models produced simulations that fit the known dynamics of B. microplus populations under Venezuelan conditions. Tactical applications of an acaricide with a residual efficacy of 3 weeks was found to reduce the total number of annual applications of acaricides routinely practiced in 2 of 3 ecological zones, while at the same time maintaining enzootic stability of Babesia sp. infection in cattle. The acaricide treatment cost could correspondingly be diminished in these two zones. The pasture rotation simulation suggests that systematic rotation among 3 to 6 pastures could result in tick population suppression, as a consequence of the change graze:rest sequences in the rotation. On-host B. microplus tick population sensitivity analysis for both simulations showed that the models were highly sensitive to larval mortality Associated with host breed type.
