Description
Summary:The purposes of this study were to develop and implement an
instrument to measure attitudes toward intercollegiate
athletic competition for women on the total score and on the
four subscales. The subjects for this investigation included
college/university presidents, athletic administrators, and
faculty athletic representatives from each of the three
divisional levels of competition comprising the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). A total of 880
administrators took part in the study. The instrument used
in this study was a three page questionnaire consisting of 33
Likert items and demographic information. The inventory
contained four subscales designed to make further comparisons
between and among the groups of administrators. The validity
and reliability of the instrument were properly established.
Packets containing the questionnaire and a cover letter were
mailed to the population of administrators in the spring of
1996. With a return rate of 52% (880 usable responses) a
second mailing was not necessary. Responses were then
prepared for computer analysis. Based on the limitations of
this study, the following general conclusions are made: 1.Female admini
women. 2.Primary women administrators and presidents
have a more favorable attitude toward intercollegiate
competition for women than do the positions of faculty
athletic representatives and athletic directors. 3.
In regard to subscales, females have a more favorable
attitude than males toward intercollegiate athletic
competition for women on subscale 1, (general competition),
and on subscale 4 (values). 4.On subscale 2, players
category, the presidents and primary women administrators had
a more favorable attitude toward athletic competition for
women than did the faculty athletic representatives and the
athletic directors.
