| Summary: | The objective of this research is to conduct a comparative analysis between the daily travel/ activity behaviors of workers and non-workers so as to provide a better understanding of their different daily travel/activity patterns as subject to temporal/ spatial and household constraints. This study represents a step towards improving the forecasting of travel/ activity behavior in urban areas by providing a conceptual framework which explicitly recognizes behavioral differences between the two groups. The source of data for this study includes 5,232 households and 22,553 trip records which were surveyed by the Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization in San Antonio in 1990. To achieve the objective of this research, and validate the hypotheses, the research methodology involves the following steps: Methodology for the first hypothesis involves the use of Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) for measuring the strength of correlation between variables, and Analysis of Variance to test not only the variability of the observations within each travel/ activity group but also the variability between the group means, based on F ratios. Methodology for the second hypothesis involves cluster analysis for a number of homogeneous daily travel/ activity patterns, and comparative analysis of the z scores for the general travel/activity patterns. Methodology for modeling daily travel/ activity behavior involves the description of a conceptual framework and conceptual structures for workers and non-workers. The analysis results verify that workers and non-workers exhibit significant differences in daily travel/ activity behaviors in terms of total daily travel/ activity duration, main activity duration, trip generation in the afternoon peak time between 4 and 6 p.m., travel modes, vehicle occupancy, and travel/ activity sequences before and after main activities. The conceptual framework provides the causal mechanism between constraints and decision processes of workers and non-workers for urban daily travel/ activity behavior. In the framework, the differences between workers and non-worker can be explained by the concept of the main activities. The conceptual method can be used as a guideline to analyze the impacts of alternative scenarios of problem constraints such as temporal and spatial dimensions. This study has a great potential for improving the forecasting of travel/ activity behavior in urban areas, especially in relation to the policy issues of transportation demand management. |
