He uses a cast of fine Russian actors, together with archive film clips and Prokofiev's own writings, to tell the story of the composer's life and career. Filmed entirely in Russia in early 1991, the film incorporates a wide range of Prokofiev's music, from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, the films Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible, and excerpts from his early opera, The Giant.
