Description
Summary:Archival information is an important component of studies of
the Mimbres culture of Southwestern New Mexico; undisturbed
sites are a rarity in the region. This paper applies
statistical methods along with factual and theoretical
advances made in more recent and better documented
excavations to the unpublished data available in the Swarts
Ruin fieldnotes of H.S and C.B. Cosgrove (1924-1927). This
research utilizes a contextual approach to address current
theoretical issues with an emphasis on social processes in
early agricultural societies. Aspects of land tenure and
attendant social markers have been found to be represented in
the material record of the Swarts Ruin. Following Saxe (I
970), expression of land tenure rights is found to be
manifested in the form of exclusive intramural cemeteries.
These cemeteries are associated with both more permanent
architecture and specific fire feature forms in the Swarts
Ruin. The aggregation of room blocks, which led to the
morphology of large Mimbres Classic settlements along the
fertile floodplains of the Mimbres River, is mirrored in the
aggregation of burials into discreet cemeteries.
