Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to determine whether academic
teaming improved student performance in the areas of
achievement and discipline. Determining the relative
effectiveness of academic teaming could aid strategic
planning that could be implemented in other junior high
schools, as well as improve College Station Texas Junior High
School. The study was done during the 1995-96 school year.
Test scores were used from the TAAS tests administered in
1994-95 and 1995-96. Test scores in math, reading, and
writing were recorded. In addition, discipline summaries for
1994-95 and 1995-96 were analyzed to determine research
responses. Variables included race, gender, student socio-
economic background, and academic team situation. A
representative sample of 285 eighth grade students was
studied. This included 143 eighth grade students in 1994-95
and 142 eighth grade students in 1995-96. A random selection
of students was used. Students at College Station Junior
High (Texas) were heterogeneously grouped. The data from
this study indicated that academic teaming does improve
student achievement in the areas of math and reading but not
writing. The data also indicated that academic teaming does
not improve student discipline. The data are reflected in a
series of tables to indicate whether academic teaming
improved student performance in the areas of student
achievement and discipline. Replicating this research study
would provide a comparison of strengths and weaknesses from
year to year. It could be an indicator of areas of success
and areas where improvement could be made. The data could be
analyzed when evaluating yearly success in the areas of
ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic background and discipline
along with academic growth.
