| Summary: | This dissertation is devoted to the study of various phenomenological and theoretical implications of grand unification and of existence of Planckian physics. In particular we examine gauge coupling unification and possible influence from the Planck scale, Planck scale interactions which effect symmetry breaking in grand unified models, proton decay within the context of string compatible SO(10) models, and rare processes predicted in certain "string- inspired" E6 models. Emphasis is placed on viewing grand unified models as an effective field theory and on the issue of naturalness. |
