| Summary: | Two types of antenna structures fed by dielectric image lines are studied. First, an aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna fed by dielectric image line is analysed. The resonant frequency and the normalized impedance of the antenna are found. The theoretical resonant frequency is found to be within 5% of experimental results for most cases. The effects of the various parameters of the structure on the resonant frequency and the impedance are also studied. Linear traveling wave antenna arrays fabricated using the microstrip patch antennas fed by dielectric image lines show good performance of radiation patterns, gain and beamwidth. Second, slot antennas with dielectric overlay fed by dielectric image lines are studied. The resonant frequency and the normalized impedance of the dipole at the aperture are determined. The effects of the various parameters of the structure on the resonant frequency and impedance are studied. Efforts to design slot antenna arrays fed by dielectric image lines were not successful, since the slot antenna's impedance variation is not large enough to achieve the amplitude taper required for good array performance. The reasons for this effect are discussed. |
