| Summary: | The major purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of selected variables on student retention for the Freshman Class of 1991 at an urban/suburban high school in South Texas. The population for the study consisted of 710 students enrolled in the Freshman class on September 17, 1991 at the local high school in South Texas. The permanent records of all 710 students were reviewed to evaluate the variables that contributed to either retention in school or dropping out. Data collected from 250 graduates and 86 dropouts were used in a Linear Multiple Regression Analysis. The analysis of data reported that vocational education and extra-curricular activities were important variables in predicting graduation from the local high school. Major research findings for the study indicated: 1. Ninety-four percent of the student graduates had taken a vocational education class. 2. Fifty- two percent of the student graduates had participated in an extra-curricular activity. 3. Of the 103 at-risk students who had graduated, 99 or 96% had participated in a vocational education class, while 45 or 43% had participated in an extra-curricular activity. Based on the findings of this study, researcher recommendations include: 1. The local school district should develop policies that encourage all students entering high school, especially those who are identified as at-risk, to be enrolled in a vocational education program. 2. The local school district should develop policies that encourage all students entering high school, especially those who are identified as at-risk, to be enrolled in an extra-curricular activity. Based on the findings from this study, researcher recommendations for further study include: 1. A study that concentrates on school districts who develop policies to include intervention of vocational education and extra-curricular activities at the middle school level. 2. A study that surveys high school dropouts and measures their perception of participation in vocational education and extra-curricular activities on student retention.
