Description
Summary:The development of a Doppler Global Velocimetry (DGV) system including both hardware and data reduction software is described. This optical system is an emerging whole-field measurement technique based on the Doppler shifting of light frequency reflected by seeded particles in a flow field. Determination of this Doppler shift is realized by using a frequency-to-intensity image converter in the form of an iodine vapor cell. The frequency shift imparted to the light scattered by moving seed particles is then employed to determine the velocity. Using light sheet illumination and imaging optics, DGV measures the global velocity within a two-dimensional "slice" of the seeded flow. This study describes the optical system developed and places emphasis on the modifications necessary to advance DGV from a laboratory prototype to a viable flow diagnostic tool. It was tested by measuring the velocity field across a 1 12 mm wheel rotating at 16,000 rpm, a 12.7 mm diameter free-expansion turbulent jet operating at a primary Mach number of 0.15, and was compared to a conventional LDV system. Three other flow cases were also measured and presented. Sources of uncertainty are identified and quantified.
