| Summary: | In order to examine the interactive effects of pre-existing plasma cholesterol concentrations and a single session of prolonged exercise on intravascular lipid metabolism, fasting blood samples from thirteen hypercholesterolemic (HC) men and twelve normocholesterolemic (NC) men (age x = 44.6 + 1.3 yrs, weight x = 86 + 3 kg, relative body fat x = 24 + 2 %, VO2peak x = 2.82 + 0.13 L / min), were obtained one day before (PRE), immediately after (IPE), 24 hours after (24 HR), and 48 hours after (48 HR) a single exercise bout (treadmill walking or jogging at 70 % VO2max, 500 kcals). Plasma lipid concentrations and enzyme activities from the blood samples were adjusted for plasma volume shifts. Significant results of a 2 (Group) x 4 (Time) analysis of variance, repeated for Time, (p < 0.05) were as follows: concentrations of total cholesterol, free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, and low- density lipoprotein cholesterol and the activity of cholesterol ester transfer protein were higher in the HC group; however, initial lipid and enzyme differences did not influence the lipid or enzyme response to the prolonged exercise session. Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were reduced at IPE, but returned to PRE levels by 24 HR and remained stable through 48 HR. Decreases in triglycerides and very-low density lipoprotein cholesterol and elevations in high-density lipoprotein and the high-density lipoprotein3- cholesterol occurred at 24 HR and remained through 48 HR. Elevations in lipoprotein lipase activity were also observed at 24 HR and 48 HR. No exercise-induced changes were determined for concentrations of free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, high density lipoprotein2- cholesterol or for the activities of hepatic triglyceride lipase, lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase, or cholesterol ester transfer protein. It was concluded that the initial plasma cholesterol concentrations of HC or NC men do not influence the lipid or intravascular enzyme response to a single session of exercise. Furthermore, a single session of prolonged exercise in sedentary men may alter plasma lipid concentrations by increasing lipoprotein lipase activity. |
