|a The purpose of this study was to examine how spatial abilities as measured on the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) could be used to predict dyscalculia. The method of diagnosing a disability using a discrepancy between ability and achievement test scores has received criticism, and based upon the learning disability literature, a viable alternative is to diagnose disability by examining skills foundational to an academic area. The current study examined the relationship between spatial abilities and arithmetic performance on the K-ABC to determine if this was a feasible approach using this test. Gender was examined separately because it has been shown to differentiate performance on spatial and arithmetic tasks. The study used the normative sample of the K-ABC, which consisted of a pool of 2000 children sampled from across the country according to census-matched demographics. Spatial abilities were found to be most closely approximated on the Spatial Memory subtest in the ability battery. This subtest was examined in relationship to the Arithmetic subtest on the achievement battery, and a high correlation was demonstrated. The subtests were factor analyzed and subjected to structural equation modeling in order to determine the nature of the correlation. Results suggested that the structural equation model demonstrated did not explain the correlation of the subtest factors well. It was demonstrated that the two subtests are developmentally ordered, and that the factors within each subtest are reliable. Gender was not a significant mediating factor in performance on either subtest. Directions for future development are provided.
