| Summary: | Three laboratory experiments employing a video game-like research tool, Space Fortress, extend previous research on inter-lesson spacing of practice on a complex, sensorimotor task. The experiments manipulated spacing of practice lessons, which were either 0 or 25 minutes, and opportunities for inter-lesson processing, which were various kinds of explicit processing or processing of a filler task that preempted explicit processing. The dependent variables were performance on sub-scores and Total scores for test games on Space Fortress. In Experiment 3, the 0 minute interval group performed better than the 25 minute interval, filler task group on Control and Wrap Scores. The 25 minute interval, explicit processing group performed better than the 25 minute interval, filler task group on Speed Score. Results suggested that massed practice lessons benefit components of complex tasks that are highly influenced by implicit processes. In contrast, results suggested that explicit inter-lesson processing activities benefit task components highly influenced by explicit processes. The findings are discussed in the context of a componential iterative phase model of skill learning that recognizes the hierarchical structure and high componential interactivity of many complex tasks. |
