|a The purpose of this study is to identify consumer behavior as it relates to energy and water usage in the hotel industry with the expectation that strategies can be developed to enlist the aid of hotel guests in controlling rising costs of water and energy. The intention is to provide information that could serve as the basis for further research, and lead to the development of conservation strategies by the hotel industry. This study focuses on the hotel industry in Texas; however, the assumption is that the findings of the study can serve as a basis for the implementation of national strategies for the enlistment of consumers in hotel conservation practices. Data were collected in three Texas cities-College Station, Houston, and San Antonio from four classes of hotels: luxury, up-scale, mid-range, and economy. Fourteen hotels participated in the administration of the research survey instrument, providing a potential convenience sample size of 750. Two pre-test instruments were administered and served as the basis for the final survey instrument. The instrument was administered by hotel workers at the front desk. Data collected from the survey was evaluated through chi square analysis, ANOVA procedures, and application of the Fishbein Behavioral Intentions Model. Results of the data evaluation did not support the first hypothesis explored in the study: The probability that individuals will engage in water and energy conservation behaviors is greater when subjects are at home than when subjects are hotel guests. The study findings indicated that individuals are more apt to practice water and energy conservation at a hotel than at home. This study found that some specific, classifiable groups of the general population are not inclined to practice conservation behavior in hotels. The results of the Fishbein behavioral intentions analysis supported the second hypothesis explored, verifying that behavioral intentions of individuals to conserve water and energy are influenced to a greater extent by the perceived consequences of behavior than by subjects' perceptions related to the expectations of important others in subjects' lives. Using these findings, the hotel industry could develop strategies to enlist these consumers in hotel conservation practices.
