|a Efforts to optimize desorption / ionization techniques such as plasma desorption mass spectrometry (252 Cf-PDMS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization (MALDI) have resulted in the development of a wide variety of matrices to enhance analyte ion yields. Utilizing the event-by-event capabilities of 252 Cf-PDMS, ions and photons from MeV projectile impacts were measured to probe the effects of matrices in different analyte-matrix systems. The influence of different matrices on analyte ion fragmentations and protonated molecule yields was studied from a series of biomolecule analytes in various matrices. By comparing the fragmentation of vitamin B12 in different carbohydrate matrices, the ability of a matrix to influence fragment ion yields appears to be related to the isolation of the analyte within the matrix. In addition, the relative protonated molecule yields of peptides in matrices used primarily in MALDI showed similar ion yield enhancements using 252 Cf- PDMS. The increase in protonated molecule yields was shown to be dependent upon the matrix, the peptide, and their respective concentrations. In addition to ions, photons emitted from fission fragment impacts can provide information about the target in the excited-state. For the first time, the photon emission from matrices under conditions similar to those found in 252 Cf-PDMS was studied using single-photon counting techniques. Through wavelength and lifetime analysis, the photon emission appears to originate from the electronic excitation of the sample, resulting in possible relationships between the ion and photon emission, both were collected simultaneously from targets containing a series of matrix and analyte concentrations. When the matrix to analyte ratio increased from a mixture of dextrose and 9- anthracenecarboxylic acid, both the photon and ion yield from the analyte increased proportionally. This proportionality suggests that ion and photon yield enhancements may be a result of similar matrix-analyte interactions.
