| Summary: | The present project examined parent/child attachment and developmental outcomes in the preschool population. Developmental outcomes for preschoolers included the social behaviors of compliance, expressive behavior, and disruptive behavior. Parent/child attachment was assessed using a Q- sort method. Temperament of the child and adult attachment style of the parent was also assessed. Results indicated that secure attachment by the child was significantly correlated with compliance and disruptive behavior. Insecure attachment was significantly associated with compliance, expressive behavior, and disruptive behavior. Temperament, although correlated with social behavior, did not confound the relationship between attachment style and social behavior. Adult attachment style was not correlated with social behavior of the child. However, for the avoidant adults, parental reaction (stress) to the child's behavior did mediate the relationship between attachment style and ratings of their childs disruptive behavior. |
