Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine the social, educational and linguistic factors that influence the second language acquisition process of Asian-Indian students in immersion programs. Specifically, the study focused on 133 post secondary level international students from India who had completed their elementary and secondary education through English immersion and were studying at Texas A&M University at the time this study was conducted. Educational data on Asian-Indians were collected through a survey with special emphasis on the language instructional design, the interaction at home, at school, and in the community. Participants' test scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language and the Verbal score from the Graduate Record Examination were used as English ability measures. All data were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSSX) computer program. The major findings documented in this study are: (a) the participants received immersion instruction in with Ll for 7-10 years and a third language for 5-7 years,English at school along (b) there was a flexible use of the mother-tongue participants and the parents during and English among the participants and the parents during communication at home, at school, and the community, and (c) the extended use and development of English beyond the classroom was positively correlated to TOEFL and GRE Verbal scores.
