| Summary: | Using a sample of 419 African American male and female university students, racial identity development and locus of control were examined. Descriptive statistics and chi square analysis were used to examine the relationships between selected demographic variables, preferred ethnic label, levels of racial identity development, and categories of locus of control. Results indicated that the demographic variables of subjects' age and mothers' income were statistically significant as they relate to racial identity development. In addition, a statistically significant relationship was found between locus of control and racial identity development. Demographic variables were not statistically significant as they related to category of locus of control. The relationship between preferred ethnic label and racial identity development could not be explored due to limited cell sizes. Possible explanations of these findings were discussed, along with methodological issues. |
