Summary:A simple but precise way of understanding group codes,
rotationally invariant trellis codes, and distance spectrums
was given in this dissertation. On trellis group codes, we
have developed two useful tests of a group trellis. One is
matrix method, the other is graphic method. We have proven
an illustrative theorem of time invariant group trellises and
a finite version of the minimum encoder theorem of trellis
group codes. On rotationally invariant trellis codes, we gave
a necessary and sufficient condition of RI codes as a
framework for code design. A systematic way to construct RI
codes based on an algebraic method is discussed. Base on the
algebraic method, we were able to construct good 90' RI
trellis codes for two dimensional QAM constellations with up
to 1024 states. From the construction method of codes, we
derived a corresponding construction method for encoders.
The differential encoders are absorbed into the trellis
encoders naturally. On distance spectrums, we were able to
figure out the modified states diagrams of ISI channels with
slightly extended states. Also the distance spectrums of the
RI trellis codes designed can be found by the modified state
diagrams with the same number of state as the original codes.
Both cases are impossible by the methods published before.
The result of the work on the catastrophic property of ISI
channels is a simple test of catastrophic channels.
