520 |a weight training on aggression levels in adult male inmates
520 |a incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice
520 |a (TDCJ). Three units of the TDCJ were utilized for data
520 |a collection. 240 inmates volunteered to participate in the
520 |a study, and 202 participants completed the pretest, midtest
520 |a and post-test. The midtest occurred 4+1.5 weeks after the
520 |a pre-test, and the post-test occurred 4+1.5 weeks after the
520 |a midtest. The experimental group consisted of inmates who
520 |a voluntarily lifted either free-weights or on a universal
520 |a machine a minimum of three times per week for at least 30
520 |a minutes per day. The control group consisted of inmates who
520 |a did not engage in a formal weight training program or lifted
520 |a less than the required protocol. The Buss Perry Aggression
520 |a Inventory (BPAI) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS)
520 |a measured aggression levels. The data were obtained by using
520 |a a 2 (Group) X 3 (Time) multivariate model with repeated
520 |a measures on the last factor. The dependent variables were
520 |a the measures from each of the two instruments. Analysis of
520 |a variance indicated that three of the four variables measured
520 |a in the BPAI (verbal aggression, hostility, and anger)
520 |a significantly decreased over time in the experimental group.
520 |a The fourth variable in the BPAI (physical aggression)
520 |a remained stable across time in both groups. Vigor scores, as
520 |a measured by the POMS, decreased in the control group over the
520 |a eight week period while remaining relatively stable in the
520 |a experimental group over time. No other scores in the POMS
520 |a were significant. There were no significant differences over
520 |a time or between the experimental and control groups for the
520 |a physical variables of body weight, handgrip and cable
520 |a tensiometer scores. The results offer some support to the
520 |a hypothesis that engaging in weight training or at least
520 |a engaging in a physical activity of choice may have an effect
520 |a on reducing verbal aggression, anger and hostility levels in
520 |a prison inmates. The hypothesis that a lack of exercise may
520 |a affect an inmates vigor was also supported.
