| Summary: | In a digital radio communication system, power and bandwidth efficient transmission is required. For this, multilevel QAM signals and high-power amplifiers (HPA) are preferred. But the nonlinear characteristics of the HPA and the high sensitivity of the QAM signal to nonlinearities result in severe performance degradation that is unacceptable. The performance of the overall system can be improved in several ways. To compensate for these nonlinear distortions, data predistortion, based on global compensation, prewarps the input signal constellation. TCM can be combined with this compensation technique to reduce the complexity of the compensator in addition to adding large coding gain. A third approach is to redesign the signal constellation to be more power efficient. A different approach based on linear amplification using nonlinear components (LINC) introduces gain, phase, and quadrature error in the practical system. The combined effects of these imbalances and errors can be effectively compensated by the two presented approaches. |
