| Item Description: | Contains nearly all the poetry written by Poe up to this time. "The raven" was first published in the Evening mirror, January 29, 1845, volume 1., number 97, with the note prefixed "We are permitted to copy (in advance of publication) from the 2d number of the American review, the following remarkable poem by Edgar Poe..." It was also published in the New York mirror, February 8, 1845, volume 1, number XVIII, page 276, with the same note. In the American review, February, 1845, volume I, number II, pages 143-145, it was printed under the caption " The raven. By--Quarles", with an appreciative note, signed "edition Am. rev." In the Broadway journal, February 8, 1845, volume 1, number 6, page 90, it appears under title "The raven. By Edgar A. Poe", with slight changes and with the notice "We copy the following poem from the American review, the new Whig magazine, on account of its unusual beauty...Mr. Willis copies it into the Mirror..." "Poems written in youth" (pages [53]-91) have foot-note "Private reasons...have induced me...to re-publish these, the crude compositions of my earliest boyhood. They are printed verbatim..."
