| Summary: | The reactivities of ester- and ether-bound fluorophores at functionalized polyethylene-solvent interfaces have been studied. The fluorophore-labeled polyethylene surfaces were prepared by blending together a small amount of a pyrene ester-terminated or pyrene ether-terminated ethylene oligomer or ethylene-ethylene glycol cooligomer and a host low linear low density polyethylene in solution. Films cast from such solutions were then studied by fluorescence spectroscopy to show that a significant number of the entrapped pyrene groups were at the polyethylene-solvent interface and capable of reaction with soluble reagents. Subsequently, base and acid catalyzed transesterification and hydrolysis,of the ester- bound pyrenes and acid catalyzed cleavage of the ether-bound pyrenes were studied by fluorescence and UV-visible spectroscopic analysis of the supernatant. The studies showed the utility of a combined spectroscopic approach to study elementary chemical transformation and demonstrated the contrasts in effects of solvent and reagent on this interfacial chemistry vs. known solvent and reagent effects in analogous solution-state reactions. |
