| Summary: | The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) teachers and administrators perceive campuses as safe and free from crime. A survey research method was used to determine perceptions of administrators and teachers in the BISD with regard to a safe school environment. Comparisons of perceptions were also made between male and female respondents, elementary and secondary respondents and more or less experienced respondents. The data identified threat and location items that contributed to perceptions regarding safeness on school campuses amongst these groups. Overall, the data revealed administrators were less concerned with safety than teachers. Major research findings for the study indicated: 1.A significant difference existed between teachers and administrators with regard to the destruction of school property as well I as a I location items. 2.The threat item of gangs and the location item of empty classrooms were perceived as significant between male and female respondents. 4.More significant differences existed between elementary and secondary respondents than any other comparison group. 5.Safety of school grounds was a signif icant concern for more and less experienced respondents. Although the data analyzed in this study suggest the lack of statistical significance in several threat and location items, these items nevertheless indicate trends which could be of concern to the district in the future. Implications from the research include: Implications from the research include: 1 -The Beaumont ISD may institute faculty in-service to make staff members more aware of threats to safety. 2. Individual campuses, as we II as the district, should consider forming school safety committees to assure campus safety. 3.Gang education programs may be set up for elementary students as a preventative measure. |
