| Summary: | This study examined the development of algebraic language in a first-year algebra class. The methodology was ethnographic and began with descriptive observations of four sections of Algebra I in a midsized suburban high school. One class was selected as the target population. Descriptive observations were interspersed with ethnographic interviews with students and the teacher. A domain analysis revealed the cultural meanings that students had for activities and events in algebra. Interviews using structural questions defined the domains, and a taxonomic analysis describes the organization of the domain of equations. A componential analysis illustrates the relationships of various parts of the domains. This study describes the algebra class from the perspective of the students as they work with signed numbers, translate words into algebraic language, and solve equations. The results are written in the form of a class ethnography using thick description. Distance education is a growing concept which was established in the early 1800's. Until recently, its useful applications were not fully explored. As the population of the world increases the demand for education through technology increases also. If there is a demand for educational change then the teacher will feel the greatest impact through stress. There have been no studies completed which combine the impact of stress with the distance education instructor. This study was designed to determine if the stress of a distance learning instructor is different from that experienced by a nondistance learning instructor. Respondents in the study were 55 university level instructors in both the distance educational environment or the traditional, non-distance education environment. Subjects completed a self report instrument which gathered data concerning demographics, stress related questions, perceived factors that cause stress, and the methods used to reduce stress. |
