| Summary: | This dissertation presents the results obtained from characterization of an external cavity traveling wave ring laser. The characteristics studied were the line width, relative intensity noise, side mode suppression ratio and longitudinal mode stability. For our laser configuration we obtained a laser line width of 10 kHz, relative intensity noise approaching the shot noise limit, and a side mode suppression ratio in excess of 60 dB. In addition, we were able to stabilize the laser such that a stable single longitudinal mode was maintained in excess of 45 hours without mode hopping. Two new theories are presented, one describes the line width of the laser as a function of the amplifier facet reflectivity and the second describes the effects of an intracavity Fabry-Perot filter. The latter theory is used to develop a novel technique for chirping the laser frequency with only manometer displacements. |
