| Summary: | The principle purposes of this research have been, first, to gather data to assist in defining the role of distance education in corporate training in the United States semiconductor manufacturing industry; second, to provide information pertaining to distance education media alternatives in corporate training in the United States semiconductor manufacturing industry; and, third, to obtain data on distance education trends in corporate training in the United States semiconductor manufacturing industry. Eighty-eight companies made up the population consisting of majority American-owned companies that manufacture their own semiconductor products. The training principal of each company was identified and mailed a survey instrument. A response rate of 91% was achieved through systematic planning, implementation, and follow-up. Eighty training principals responded to the survey instrument that investigated semiconductor manufacturers by number of employees that utilize distance education media; the types of distance education media that is used; the types of training programs that utilize distance education media; the degree of usage of instructional methods in training programs; the extent that distance education media are used in corporate training; and the trends in training programs, instructional methods, and distance education media in the United States semiconductor manufacturing industry. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis of the data. The research indicated that approximately 73% of the companies in the industry employed less than 1000 persons. Fifty-six percent of the companies reported that they had no formal training department. Eighty-one percent of all the companies in the study reported use of distance education media (videotape, audiotape, correspondence texts, and telecommunication). Videotape is used by approximately 75% of the companies in the study. Correspondence texts are used by approximately 43% of the companies. Audiotape is used by 31% of the companies. Telecommunication, the least used distance education media, is used by 30% of all the companies in the study. Distance education media were used most often in management and supervisory skills, communication skills, and technical education and training programs. The trend over the next 5 years, as reported by the training principals, indicate expanded training activities in all training programs and increased use of distance education media. |
