Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to describe mentoring practices
used with interns in the elementary schools of a school-
university partnership. Types, amounts, and frequency of
mentoring support given by the university, district, and
individual school mentors are identified and described. The
89 interns who participated in this study were seniors
majoring in elementary education who were hired as full-time
teachers of record in 42 elementary schools in 4 school
districts. Data collection methods included questionnaires
for interns, mentors and university supervisors; interviews
of a stratified random sample of interns and mentors; and a
comparative case study of intern-mentor pairs at both
extremes
of mentorinvolvement. The major findings of this study are
as
follows-,(1) the school-university partnership model
facilitated
the full-time release of mentor teachers to engage in
mentoring
activities, but the model did not facilitate consistent
release
time for intern teachers; (2) mentor teachers in partner
school spent more time mentoring and demonstrated more
variety in mentoring practices than mentor teachers in non-
partner schools, and (3) principals played a pivotal role in
determining the quality of the mentoring provided at
individual schools.
