| Summary: | Katz (1974) postulated that there were three principle skill categories important to administrators in business: technical, human and conceptual. He did not test his theory in the higher education setting. The purpose of the present study was to determine the importance of these skills among student affairs administrators in higher education and to determine if there are differences in perceptions of importance by administrative level, professional development level and gender. The population consisted of student affairs administrators who were members of the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA). The survey instrument was mailed to the entire population of TACUSPA. Responses were received from 314 members (89.4%), 283 which were useable. The findings revealed that the skills considered most important to TACUSPA student affairs administrators were in the human skill category and involved interpersonal relationship skills, organizational skills, communication skills and directive skills necessary for working with others. Human skills were also rated as most important at all levels of administration followed by conceptual skills and technical skills. Gender did not appear to impact the importance of skills across administrative levels. Similarly, TACUSPA student affairs administrators in the application and additive stage of professional development rated human skills as most important followed by conceptual and technical skills. Gender did not appear to impact these ratings. |
