520 |a In preparation for the launch of TRMM, new algorithms must be
520 |a created that take advantage of the combined data from radar
520 |a and microwave radiometers that will be on board the
520 |a satellite. A microwave radiative transfer algorithm with a
520 |a one-dimensional cloud model is created that incorporates data
520 |a from radar and radiometers using data obtained from TCM90 and
520 |a TOGA-COARE flown over the western Pacific in 1990 and 1993,
520 |a respectively. First, a convective cloud model (CCM) was
520 |a created that contained a CLW distribution and vertical rain
520 |a rate structure that were common in previous studies. The
520 |a brightness temperature - rain rate (T-R) relationships
520 |a generated by the CCM are shown to produce warmer brightness
520 |a temperatures at low rain rates and lower brightness
520 |a temperatures at high rain rates than the Wilheit et al.
520 |a (1977) model (WILM) and TOGA-COARE observations. Next, a
520 |a hybrid cloud model (HCM) was developed using observations
520 |a from TOGA-COARE, TCM-90, and other field projects.
520 |a Observations changed the cloud model in four ways. First,
520 |a stratiform clouds with low rain rates were shown to have a
520 |a low CLW content (< 0.1 g M-3). Second, radar data showed a
520 |a linear decrease in the logarithm of the backscatter of ice
520 |a particles above the freezing level. Third, tropical clouds
520 |a contained more small drops and fewer large drops than
520 |a predicted by the Marshall - Palmer drop-size distribution
520 |a (DSD). Last, the reflectivity of ocean surface appears to
520 |a be specular. The T-R relationships generated by the HCM are
520 |a different from the CCM. The HCM predicts colder brightness
520 |a temperatures at low rain rates than in the CCM because of a
520 |a low CLW content in the cloud at rain rates < 5 mm h-1. At
520 |a higher rain rates, the vertical precipitation structure and
520 |a DSD above the freezing level in the HCM make the cloud
520 |a transparent to microwave radiation resulting in warmer
520 |a upwelling brightness temperatures at each frequency. The
520 |a brightness temperatures generated by the HCM closely agree
520 |a with observations from TOGA-COARE. This study shows that a
520 |a plane-parallel microwave radiative transfer algorithm coupled
520 |a with a cloud model based on microphysical observations can
520 |a accurately simulate rainfall observed in the tropics.
