| Summary: | An analysis for the delamination evolution in laminated composites has been developed. This analysis took into account the process zone that develops ahead of the delamination by the use of a cohesive zone model. Of interest to this research was the modeling and studying the effects of micro-cracked process zones. The effects of the micro-cracked process zones were represented in the analysis via the nonlinear traction forces acting on the cohesive zone. Two approaches, one being phenomenological and the other being micromechanics based, to modeling the interfacial constitutive response of a micro-cracked cohesive zone were examined. This analysis was incorporated into a two-dimensional finite element code to study the delamination evolution in cross-ply laminates subjected to out-of-plane loading. A limited experimental program was conducted to obtain delamination evolution data and comparisons were made with the model predictions. The predicted delamination evolution trends were found to be in good agreement with the experiment data. |
