Description
Summary:Feedback is critical for learning any task. One form of
feedback typically manipulated is knowledge of results (KR).
In the present experiment, KR was given either immediately
after each trial or in summary form after 8 trials (one
block). An error estimation protocol was used to evaluate
error detection capacity for the summary KR manipulation.
The task used was to push a specified four key sequence in a
predetermined time frame. Four groups were tested through an
acquisition phase of 12 blocks of 8 trials. One group was
asked to estimate their response time and were given KR
immediately after each trial. Another group was asked to
estimate their response time and were given KR in summary
form after 8 trials. The last two groups were given KR in
immediate and summary form without having to estimate their
response time. All groups were then tested for immediate and
delayed retention on a no KR test given 1 5 seconds and 24
hours after acquisition. Within the limitations of this
experiment and based on the results, the following
conclusions were established: 1.Summary-KR stabilizes
performance from the end of acquisition to 24 hour retention.
2.Summary-KR and Immediate-KR facilitate one's ability to
estimate performance across acquisition blocks. 3. Immediate
feedback causes subjects to estimate errors better than those
receiving summary-KR during the first part of acquisition.
At the end of acquisition, SummaryKR and Immediate-KR groups
have equal estimation abilities. 4. Summary-KR stabilizes ACE
whereas Estimation has no effect.
