Description
Summary:Monte Carlo programs were developed to investigate the
importance of Raman scattering in the ocean. The following
research has been done by simulating the underwater light
field. The filling in of solar Fraunhofer lines has been
studied considering Raman scattering effect and Brillouin
scattering effect. Raman scattering can cause the filling in
of solar Fraunhofer lines in the ocean. The amount of fill
varies with solar zenith angle, angle of view, depth in the
ocean, and magnitude of the cross sections. Brillouin
scattering can also cause the fill for narrow Fraunhofer
lines. The complete four component Stokes vector were used in
the calculation of the underwater light field. The effect of
Raman scattering on the polarization is significant and can
be detected by making polarimetric measurements within the
ocean.
