Mean LH was higher (P<.05) in treated heifers than in controls. After an 8 d rest period heifers were challenged with their PGF2a dose followed by GNRH (1 00 ng/kg BW). Mean LH was higher (P<.06) in heifers receiving 12.5 than in heifers receiving 25 and intermediate in heifers receiving 0 mg of PGF2a, Experiment 11, primiparous Brahman cows were fed 3.74%, 5.20% or 6.55% dietary fat before and after calving. Cows receiving 6.55% had higher (P<.04) serum cholesterol concentrations after calving than cows fed 3.74% or 5.20% dietary fat. Cows fed 5.20% and 6.55% dietary fat had greater (P<.05) numbers of total follicles than cows fed 3.74% dietary fat, however cows fed 5.20% had the greatest (P<.05) number and size of large follicles. Postpartum interval was similar (P>. 1 0) among groups, however the percentage of cows estrous cycling by d 90 after calving was numerically greater (P>. 1 0) in cows fed 5.20% (75%) than cows fed 6.55% (55%) or 3.74% (55%) dietary fat. Experiment 111, multiparous unilaterally ovariectomized estrous cycling cows were fed 3.74 or 5.20% dietary fat. When the first dominant follicle during the second estrous cycle reached 8 mm, the ovary was harvested and the CL cultured. On d 7 of the first estrous cycle cows fed 5.20% had higher (P<.05) serum cholesterol concentrations than cows fed 3.74% dietary fat. On d 5 of the second estrous cycle serum progesterone was higher (P<.Ol) in treated cows, but not cholesterol or triglyceride concentrations. During CL culture progesterone production was similar (P<. 1 0) among treatments. Control cows had higher (P<.06) estradiol-17fl:progesterone ratio in follicular fluid of dominant follicles than treated cows. Follicular numbers were greater (P<.03) in cows fed 5.20% dietary fat by the third follicular wave of the first estrous dietary fat by the third follicular wave of the first estrous release in cattle. Enhanced follicular development occurred when cows were supplemented with rice bran to reach 5.20% or 6.55% dietary fat in both postpartum and estrous cycling cows. |
