| Summary: | Using an intergroup prisoner's dilemma paradigm, this experiment examined whether individual's outgroup attitude inferences, trait inferences, expectations of outgroup cooperation, and own decision behavior are influenced by biased perceptions of the outgroup's previous decision. Subjects were informed of a) the distribution of outgroup member's decisions, b) the decision rule used to combine individual outgroup member's decisions into a group decision, and c) the outgroup's final decision for their previous interaction. The outgroup previous decision was manipulated by changing the decision rule while holding constant the number of cooperative outgroup members' choices. The results demonstrate that subjects' outgroup attitude inferences and expectation of outgroup cooperation display the correspondence bias. Subjects inferred that the typical member of a previously cooperative outgroup held more cooperative attitudes than the typical member of a previously defecting outgroup. Furthermore, outgroups with a previous history of cooperation were perceived as more likely to cooperate in the future than previously defecting outgroups. Subjects' decision behavior displayed a high degree of defection, and was not affected by the manipulation of previous outgroup decision. |
