Summary:Performance characterization, and a detailed comparison, of the Texas A&M Multiple Disk Pump (TAMU-MDP) and the Biomedicus BP-80 was performed. Comparison results indicate exceptional low-afterload and limited high-afterload performance of the TAMU-NMP versus the Biomedicus BP-80. Tests were performed in conjunction with the Texas Heart Institute to evaluate the hemolytic index of the TAMU-NMP. Hemolysis data indicate very low levels of blood damage during high flow rate tests. Comparisons between TAMU-NMP data and published results for clinically used artificial hearts reveal exceptionally low levels of hemolysis. Performance optimization experiments were conducted which varied the disk spacing, number of disks, motor speed, afterload and preload. Results indicate multidimensional regions of significantly improved performance.
