Description
Summary:This study presents a novel use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) for creating an architectural program for a health care facility. To do that the basis for and means of architectural programming are reviewed, including the major architectural programming paradigms in the United States. Four major requirements for an architectural programming method are identified from David Garvin's eight dimensions of quality. Methods from programming, design methods and QFD are evaluated with respect to criteria developed from the requirements. Two methods of QFD, comprehensive QFD and structured QFD, are reviewed and a QFD framework is chosen. The framework is specialized for the needs of a health care facility. The specialized framework is used to produce a program for a project for a diagnostic and treatment facility designed for a small hospital. The results of programming the facility using a traditional programming method are compared to the results of programming the facility using the QFD method. In addition to a novel application of QFD, this study proposes a framework for programming to optimize health care facilities for patients, for staff, for owners, or to resolve the needs of these groups.
