| Summary: | This study was designed to identify items from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - 2 (MMPI-2) which functioned differentially for Hispanics and Whites. The subjects were Hispanic and White mental health outpatients. There were 90 Hispanic subjects, 49 females and 41 males. The White subjects were drawn from a population of 1,213 females and 733 males. Ninety White subjects, 49 females and 41 males, were matched with the Hispanic subjects using the criteria of age, gender, education, and occupational level. The first 370 items from the MMPI-2 were analyzed using the partial correlation procedure. To determine if any of the items functioned differentially for Hispanics and Whites, correlations were computed between ethnicity and item, ethnicity and total scale score, and item and total scale score. In the same way, to determine differential item performance for males and females, correlations between gender and item, gender and total scale score, and item and total scale score were used to compute a partial correlation between gender and item performance with the influence of total scale score ,removed. The coefficients were computed for each item within each subscale of the MMPI-2. The item bias analysis indicated that Hispanics had nonequivalent responses on 3 of the items and Whites had nonequivalent responses on S of the items. Therefore, Hispanics and whites had essentially the same number of statistically biased items. When gender differences were examined, the item bias analysis indicated that males had nonequivalent responses on 11 of the items while females had nonequivalent responses on 7 of the items. The results of the present study indicate that relatively few of the items on the MMPI-2 are biased against Hispanics, Whites, or either gender. |
