Description
Summary:The problem of large variability in Predicted pile capacity
by various deterministic models is studied in relation to the
measured capacity. Ten popularly used pile capacity
prediction methods are evaluated for their predictive
performance and for overall model uncertainty. An
independent database with 95 pile load tests performed by the
Mississippi Department of Transportation is electronically
organized for this purpose. A method of evaluating the
predictive performance and the overall model uncertainty is
studied. Ranking of the methods based on the statistical
parameters of model uncertainty and the predictive
performance is carried out. A TEAM approach to reduce the
model uncertainty and improve the reliability of pile
capacity prediction is proposed. It involves using a group
of carefully selected deterministic models, such that the
total error component is kept to a minimum. The TEAM
approach is proposed at three levels. A mathematical
validation of the TEAM approach is presented. The relation
between the risk of non performance and the factor of safety
is analyzed by assuming a limit state function. The unified
TEAM model is shown to be an improved model compared to the
individual deterministic models. The improvement is in the
reduced model uncertainty and the reduced risk of non
performance. A logical and sound framework is proposed for
evaluating other foundation databases.
