| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of year- round education in Texas on University Interscholastic League athletic programs at the middle school level as perceived by middle school principals, athletic directors, and teachers with coaching responsibilities. This study should contribute some valuable data for those persons responsible for policy decisions and direction of U.I.L. activities. Data was gathered through the use of a 20-item fourpoint Likert scale survey questionnaire which included the following ratings: 1 strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = agree, 4 strongly agree. The survey was sent to all middle school principals, athletic directors, and teachers with coaching responsibilities that participate in U.I.L. programs at year-round schools in Texas. The survey questionnaire was developed to solicit responses and examine perceptions by principals, athletic directors, and teachers with coaching responsibilities on the impact year-round education has on middle school athletics. In the analysis of data, results were reported in the form of percentages, minimum responses, maximum responses, means, and standard deviations. Responses to the total survey, included Student Eligibility, Level of Student Participation, Student Academic Performance, Financial Expenditures and Revenues, Attitudes of Principals, Athletic Directors, and Teachers with coaching responsibilities. Results indicated that principals, athletic directors, and teachers with coaching responsibilities did not differ on their overall perceptions of the impact year-round education has on middle school athletic programs. One can conclude from this research study that principals, athletic directors and coaches did not differ in their overall perception on the impact that year- round education has on middle school athletic programs in Texas. Based on the findings, recommendations may be suggested that with some legislative modification, proper planning, monetary support and good management, yearround education can have a positive impact on middle school athletic programs in Texas. |
