| Summary: | Historically, differential diagnosis of children and adolescents who have an emotional disturbance has been assessed by the presence or absence of emotional indicators and a youngster's educational performance being impacted by their emotional condition. The educational impact has been easy to assess, as there are developmental and age standards to compare a youngster's achievement. The emotional characteristics of youngsters have been difficult to assess as the indicators are general and vague, applying to all youngsters ages 3-21. In addition, the rating scales focus on clinical symptoms at the exclusion of the assessment of a youngster's strengths and adaptive skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate differences in adaptive and clinical behavior in youngsters who have an emotional disturbance from youngsters who have not been referred for mental health problems across gender and developmental levels. The Behavior Assessment Scale for Children (BASC), Parenting Rating Scale, was the instrument used to investigate the four research questions. The results revealed that the best way to discriminate between the emotionally disturbed group from the nonreferred group and the four gender groups was through the Externalizing/ Adaptive dimension. The Adaptive/ Internalizing dimension was the best way to discriminate between the four age groups and the eight age by gender groups. |
