Description
Summary:evidence between paired measures of depression for
children/adolescents and what effect the probable sources of
measurement error have on systematically limiting the
convergent validity. Automated literature retrieval
procedures produced a group of 2,114 possibly relevant
citations. Previewing and viewing techniques reduced the
pool to 137 studies which comprised two data bases: a) 205
reported correlations between 73 unique paired measures of
depression and b) 223 mean scores for 52 unique paired
measures of depression. Convergent validity was established
(r = + 0.44; std. = 0.23; n = 205) by the collection of
correlations. Effect sizes were calculated for each unique
pairing in both data bases. Systematic error was explored by
calculating Pearson correlations between each of the possible
sources of error and the effect sizes. Significance was
established by calculating t-test or analysis of variance
between the effect sizes and the possible sources of error.
Sources of error included the influence of: a) informant
roles and settings, b) characteristics of the children, c)
issues of test design and d) incidental variables common to
meta-analysis studies. Informant roles and setting
significantly biased the degree of correlation between
measures of depression.
