Summary:Previous research has suggested that having a mentor can have
a powerful impact on career development. Studies have
indicated that gender and previous experience in a
mentor/protege relationship may influence the development of
the relationship between mentor and protege. The purpose of
this study was to investigate whether perceptions of the
initiation phase of the mentor/protege relationship differed
by 1. role as student/faculty, 2. gender, or 3. previous
experience in a mentoring relationship. A questionnaire was
devised and mailed to directors of training of APA-accredited
counseling psychology programs. Directors were asked to
distribute questionnaires to all faculty and to students that
had been accepted for internship in Fall, 1994. Data obtained
from 226 questionnaires did support the hypothesis that one's
role as student or faculty influenced perceptions of the
initiation process. Faculty and students held differing
views on the frequency of the development of mentor/protege
relationships, on who is responsible for initiation and on
factors that inhibit mentoring. Faculty also reported a
greater frequency of mentoring-enhancing interactions than
did students. In contrast to previous research, gender did
not play a significant role in perceptions of the initiation
of mentoring; male and female respondents held very similar
views on the initiation process. Nor did previous experience
in a mentoring relationship influence perceptions of the
students or faculty with respect to initiation. The
implications of these findings are discussed and
recommendations for both training programs and future
research are made.
