| Summary: | Efforts to explain substance abuse continue to be a matter of importance. One promising area of research undertaken by this study was the investigation of personality correlates related to substance abuse. The MMPI profiles of 193 inmates were subjected to cluster analysis procedures. Ward's method partitioned the data into four personality types. Type 1 depicted an emotionally unstable personality type (4-9 MMPI codetype), Type 2 depicted an antisocial personality type (spike 4 MMPI codetype), Type 3 depicted a psychoneurotic personality type (2-1 MMPI codetype, with additional significant elevations on scales 4, 7, 8, and 3), and Type 4 depicted a normal personality type. Subsequent discriminant analyses and chi-square analyses validated personality type differences relative to several intrapersonal and personal demographic variables. |
