| Summary: | Currently daylight design evaluations are done either numerically or by photographic analysis of the scaled models. These methods are time consuming and are not sufficient to evaluate the quality of the daylight design. Using daylight simulation programs for the quantitative as well as qualitative analysis is proposed for a good daylight design. The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of daylight simulation programs in the architectural design process. An office room in the Langford Architecture building at Texas A&M University was chosen for the case study. Actual illumination measurements on the workplane were taken on an overcast day at 9:00 AM. The test room was simulated using the Radiance light simulation program. A 3-D model of the test room was created using AutoCAD. This model was then transferred into 'rad' format using 'torad' program. The accuracy of daylight simulation program in representing physical behavior of daylight and the time required for simulating low and medium quality images with varying details are analyzed and discussed. The user-friendliness of the program is emphasized for the effective use in the design process. The study concludes with suggestions for further areas of research. |
