Description
Summary:Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) is an emerging technology in
the field of communications. It is the technique of choice
for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-
ISDN) Networks. Recently, there has been much effort to em
ploy this technology in the Local Area Networks(LAN's). ATM
provides dedicated bandwidth to hosts instead of sharing the
bandwidth among many hosts. However, a bottleneck exists in
the ATM LAN switch, which has to be designed to handle
extreme traffic loads. This research describes an effort to
model and simulate an ATM LAN under different kinds of data
traffic inputs. Uniform random traffic distribution is used
to validate our simulation setup for functionality and
accuracy of data collected. The behavior of the switch is
also studied by assuming Poisson arrivals for input traffic.
The burstiness of data traffic is then modeled with a
geometric distribution and the performance of the switch is
studied and compared with the uniform random traffic input
case.
